History

The Chinese Christian Church was the first Chinese church founded from a Bible Study group in this area.  In 1957, Ted Choy and a few Chinese foreign students began to meet for Bible studies in the office of International Students, Inc. in Calvert Street in Washington, D.C. The first Sunday worship service held in Mandarin was on August 31, 1958, with about twenty Chinese Christians in attendance. With growth came a move to a larger facility at 5709 16th Street, N.W. The church was officially incorporated as “Chinese Mandarin Church” with Rev. Moses Chow as the first pastor.  The church is a non-denominational protestant church, basing our faith and conduct on the teachings of the Bible, financially independent, trusting in the rich provision of the Lord and the free will offerings of our members.

As church attendance continued to grow, a building program was established in 1969 under Pastor Fred Cheung. The Piney Branch Road location was purchased, and the sanctuary building was completed in March 1971. The church was renamed as “Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington, D.C.”.   In the following half century, we were blessed by the ministries of several pastors. We held firm the truth from the Bible, and set the purpose of our church to be “biblical, prayerful, unified, and sending”.  Our members were of one mind spreading the gospel and leading people to Jesus Christ. Since 1972, we have conducted annual Missions Conferences to promote and to support overseas missions by action and with finance.  We send out adults and youth as short term missionaries to Europe and Asia to minister and to learn.  For local evangelism, a branch church in Germantown was established in 2004. The Germantown church has now become a fully independent church. With our effort to continue expanding our local evangelistic ministry, we established a branch church at Clarksburg, Maryland in 2008.  Recently, we added a ministry focused on Chinese international students.  We provide airport pickups and arrange for temporary housing.  We also provide weekly transportation to our fellowship meetings and Sunday worships.  We welcome present and future students to contact us.

In 2011, we experienced special blessings from the Lord.  The two houses next to our church went on the market.  They were perfect for our church expansion. After much prayer, we felt the leading of the Lord to acquire the properties.  The Official Board made the proposal, with very strong support from the congregation.  The financing was made through “promissory notes” to our members and not through bank loans.  This purchase testifies to the grace of God, and our members’ faith and commitment to and love for our church.

With the departure of our Senior Pastor James Sun in 2011, the church ministry is jointly served by our Associate Pastor Eugene Schamko, three elders (George Chang, Mark Ho, and K.C. Leung), Youth Minister Jason Wang, with eleven Deacons and their co-workers while diligently searching for a new pastor.

Brother Stanley Chan and Brother Daniel Wu were trained and mentored by the Elder Board in past years and were found qualified and met church elder requirements.  After passing the elder examination, they were confirmed by the congregation and ordinated as elders in Feb 2012. May the Lord use all our elders in enlarging God’s kingdom!

In March 2012, Youth Minister Jason Wang resigned and moved back to Texas where he and his wife can be closer to their families while expecting their first child. The Official Board appointed a Search Committee to search for a new youth minister. In the interim, the Official Board appointed Brother Ryan Price to serve and lead the youth and teens ministry.

After three years of praying and searching, in mid-2014, God moved His servant Pastor Daniel Zhao to contact our church.  Pastor Zhao was serving as the Chinese Pastor in Corning Chinese Christian Church in Corning, NY.  After much prayer, several meetings and fellowship with our church, Rev. Zhao followed God’s calling to serve as Chinese Associate Pastor at our church.  An installation ceremony for Rev. Zhao as Chinese Associate Pastor of our church was held on September 7, 2014, during the 56th Church Anniversary Thanksgiving Worship Service.  We thank the Lord for bringing His faithful servant to come to serve with other church co-workers as a team to spread the Gospel.  We also praise the Lord for a very smooth relocation for the Zhao family.

God continues to bless our church with a Youth Minister Shane Tu who graduated from Southeastern Theological Seminary, NC in December 2014 and was ordained as Pastor in February 2015 in Cross Lanes Baptist Church, West Virginia. Rev. Tu followed God’s calling to accept our invitation to serve as our Youth Minister in July 2015. An installation ceremony was held on September 6, 2015, during the 57th Church Anniversary Celebration Worship Service. Praise the Lord.

Our church has many diversified ministries.  In addition to Chinese and English worship services, we have the Clarksburg Branch Church ministry, teens ministry, children ministry, students ministry, Sunday school, choir, library, nursery, many fellowship groups and prayer meetings.  We welcome believers to come and worship with us and  join our ministries. Special welcome is extended to those who want to hear the gospel, to learn the truth and to know Jesus Christ.
